It’s what’s best for the family. Everyone tells him so. They lift their chins and tsk quietly and tell him not to mind it a bit, her leaving like that. It couldn’t work with Rachel. For this once, it wouldn’t do to follow his heart. And really, Argine’s just as pretty, isn’t she?
His mouth tastes like copper. His world is falling into flame. His last word is given to the only woman he’s ever truly loved, but his last thought is for his daughter. She’s what’s best for the family.
She has always been more than worth the heartbreak.
007. Blood-brothers
Edgar’s first broken bone is his upper right arm. It stings less when Andrew helps him to his feet with a startled laugh and confirmation that yes, that was an amazing leap.
Edgar first draws blood in his challenge up to Six. It haunts him less when Andrew reaches for his shoulder and squeezes tight, murmurs soft against the pounding of his heart in his own ears.
Edgar’s first child is a daughter. It doesn’t sink in until he sees her nestled in Andrew’s arm, hears his oldest friend in the world say ‘hello’ to Eileen for the first time.
029. The snare
Andrew is always telling him to cool down, keep his head on straight, think things through. Assess the field instead of charging in head-first.
He can’t. He tries—and when he can, he trusts the dig of his friend’s fingers into his arm. But it’s not the way he lives. Edgar is a warrior, not a hunter; a man who attacks, not one who sits in wait. His blood runs hot. He throws himself into life with everything he has. Can’t stop from speaking his mind. Won’t hold punches.
Wouldn’t check a brake line if his life depended on it.
